Judging Amy
Amy Gray is a Harvard-educated New York corporate lawyer who, after separating from her husband, finds herself back in her childhood home in Hartford, Conn., living with her nagging mom and daughter while working as a judge for Hartford’s family court. Acting on instinct more than protocol, Judge Amy tries to mete out justice while struggling with her new status as a single mother. Amy’s mom, Maxine, is a caseworker for the Department of Children and Families. Amy Brenneman and Tyne Daly star in this courtroom drama series.

My first child.
I created “Judging Amy” at the suggestion of my mother, Judge Frederica Brenneman. There were many “firsts” with this show: the first with a female judge as a lead, the first procedural that was set in the world of juvenile justice, and the first drama created by the lead actress (it happens more often with comedies and comedians.) Showrunner Barbara Hall breathed life into characters I had only imagined, my husband Brad directed the pilot and set the world in motion, and Tyne Daly embodied everything a mother could be. We shot for six seasons, during which time I birthed both my children while simultaneously starring and executive producing. A gift, all of it.
