This film was my first collaboration with Rodrigo Garcia, with whom I also made “Nine Lives” and “Mother and Child.” Rodrigo is a lifelong friend. He is also that rare male filmmaker with a genuine interest in and an intuitive understanding of female characters. He thinks and writes like a short story writer; each chapter of this film is full and complete. This film also got us all to the Cannes Film Festival and began, for me, one of the most loving and productive collaborations of my professional life.
